Review: A Toolkit for Modern Life by Clinical Psychologist Dr Emma Hepburn

Even without a pandemic, life can throw all sorts at us and it can be easy for everything to build up and feel overwhelming.

To kick off December I decided to take stock and bring some much needed balance to my life with ‘A Toolkit for Modern Life’ by clinical psychologist @thepsychologymum - a self help guide which acts as a practical toolkit for taking care of your mental and emotional wellbeing.

Wow - what a gem of a book, I absolutely loved this and couldn’t recommend it highly enough. It’s split into comprehensive and easy to navigate sections so that you can read the whole thing from start to finish as I did, or you can easily delve into the sections which resonate with you at any given time.

I loved working through this book, particularly the sections on value and establishing what made me feel most fulfilled and at my happiest, so I can prioritise this going forward.

I also really loved the section on capacity and the practical tips for scaling back when I needed to, so that I don’t end up feeling exhausted, stressed out and ready to Kim K cry over the most minor of events.

The exercises throughout the book were fantastic for allowing me to establish any areas out of balance and how I can work on this moving forward. There are so many brilliant sections, from dealing with anxiety and recognising your emotions, working through comparison, social media and goals and failure, all with easy to implement practical advice.

The book is also absolutely gorgeous with lots of her infamous illustrations which are super fun, making it perfect as a gift for a loved one or for yourself for a little TLC.

I highly recommend this book - it’s definitely one I will be revisiting again and again.
