I’m a huge fan of the @penguinukbooks
Vintage Classics imprint, so browsing the second hand bookshops in York
it didn’t take much encouragement to pick up Bruno’s Dream by Iris
Murdoch.
This is such a beautifully written narrative, and
definitely one of my all time favourites. This is a second person
narrative set in London, focusing on 90 year old Bruno, who now dying
fixates on his past mistakes and reconciliation; his estranged son Miles
who is an unsuccessful poet grieving the loss of his first wife; Diana a
bored housewife who has dedicated her life to her husband and realises
she is not entirely happy, and the subsequent fall out as characters
bounce from one to the other in an attempt for love and redemption.
I loved the exploration of guilt, remorse, memory, the passing of time and relationships.
